Preventative Care

The best treatment for tooth and gum problems is to prevent them before they start. Sensible oral hygiene habits, including brushing with an electric toothbrush twice per day and flossing regularly are necessary but are not enough by themselves. Regular oral examinations and professional cleanings are essential to maintaining the health of your mouth and of your body.

Family Dental Care

At The Paddington Dental Surgery, we feel that it is important to provide your child with a safe, fun environment that will eliminate any fears they may have. It is our belief that a positive experience early on will lead to good dental hygiene habits, including regular check-ups in their adult lives. Our friendly, comforting staff will make your children feel at ease, and our team will work with you to provide excellent preventative care and maintenance for them. We want your children to have beautiful, healthy smiles they can be proud of for years to come!

Oral Exams

Oral exams are a very important part of your overall dental health. We recommend coming in for an oral exam twice a year so that we can be sure to catch any issues before they worsen. During your visit, one of our dental hygienists or dentists will examine the inside of your mouth to assess the health of your teeth and gums. If there are any concerns, they will work with you to create a personalised treatment plan to remedy the issue and avoid any further health problems. It’s very important to have at least two oral exams each year to make sure existing problems are identified and to prevent serious issues from occurring down the road.

Dental Cleanings

Cleanings are a vital part of a regular visit to our office. In addition to an oral exam, dental cleanings are recommended on an individualised basis, usually every 6 months. Regular brushing and flossing isn’t always enough – a dental cleaning using advanced equipment can prevent development of gum disease and tooth decay in ways that home care cannot. We can also provide you with optional fluoride treatments and remineralising pastes to strengthen teeth, prevent cavities and eliminate sensitivity. We also like to use this time to learn more about your at-home dental hygiene habits so that we can suggest improvements, when necessary. We will recommend products that will optimise your oral home-care and we can also show you the best materials for brushing, flossing and rinsing.

We have Sydney’s most comprehensive collection of oral hygiene products, selling at below retail prices to aid our guests in achieving optimum home care. In fact, many of these products are not available elsewhere in the state.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer will be diagnosed in more than 1200 Australians this year, which is the equivalent of four new cases each day. The rate of oral cancer cases continues to rise, which makes it extremely important to have regular screenings for this life-threatening condition. Oral cancer does not typically show symptoms in its earliest stages. However, we utilise the innovative VELscope® Vx during routine dental treatments (at no extra charge) to identify soft tissue abnormalities that may not be visible to the naked eye. Oral cancer screenings can detect the condition at an early stage and research has shown that early detection followed by treatment can lead to an 80-90 percent chance of survival. Oral cancer screenings with the VELscope® Vx take only about a minute and involve no unpleasant stains or rinses. They are easily integrated into a regular oral exam and can potentially be a lifesaving procedure.

Sealants

Our back teeth have contours and crevices on the chewing surfaces that can easily allow for bacteria to get in and cause damage and possibly decay. Sealants can be applied to the area in order to prevent this from happening. This treatment is ideal for young children as it can protect their teeth for many years. The application is generally quick and helps to prevent potential damage that could lead to extensive dental work later in life.

Sterilisation and Infection Control

At The Paddington Dental Surgery, we take our patient’s safety very seriously. We use disposable equipment when possible and ensure that all of our reusable equipment is thoroughly sterilised before every use. All countertops and surfaces in our clinic are carefully disinfected on a regular basis and our staff members wear protective gloves and face masks when working with our patients.

As part of our commitment to the highest level of sterilisation, we utilise Melag Premium-Plus-Class sterilisers, known throughout the world as a benchmark for safe dental care. We fully decontaminate work areas and dental chairs between visits and hyper-filter our water for maximum safety. We exceed hospital standards, because your health and safety is paramount.

Dental Emergencies

Maintaining good dental health will hopefully prevent any incidence of a dental emergency. However, it can happen to anyone. In case of a dental emergency, we issue our patients with a 24-hour phone number to call for help. We will do whatever we can to see you as soon as possible. If you feel that you are suffering from a dental emergency, please contact our practice immediately.

Scaling and Root Planing

Plaque and tartar build-up can often lay deep within the gums. We offer scaling and planing in order to remove the harmful pockets of bacteria found around the roots of your teeth. This is a non-surgical process that can improve the health of your gums and work to prevent any further damage from gum disease. After scaling and planing is completed, we will use an advanced laser to seal the gums, helping them to quickly heal and reducing any discomfort you might experience after the procedure.

Athletic Mouth Guards

Thousands of teeth are damaged or knocked out in sporting activities each year. While this number is staggering, the Australian Dental Association estimates that more than ten times that figure of oral injuries are prevented by use of a customised mouthguard. While many sporting goods stores sell mouthguards, these versions are often not as effective as a proper dentist’s customised version. Comparing store purchased stock or “boil-and-bite” mouthguards to a dentist-fabricated custom sports mouthguard reveals significant differences. “Boil-and-bite” type guards do not typically fit as accurately as custom-fabricated ones, so they are often uncomfortable and interfere with the wearer’s breathing and speaking ability – all resulting in being worn less than is optimum for protection.

“Boil-and-bite” guards provide a false sense of protection due to the decrease in thickness when the wearer bites into place during its softening phase. Our sporting mouthguards are made using the highest quality materials and offer an exact duplication of your mouth. They are virtually guaranteed to stay in place with no effort – giving the athlete the ability to put their attention where it belongs: on the game.

We can customise colours, styles, and shapes for the individual. We can even provide a mouthguard that properly aligns the jaw, putting the entire body in equilibrium. When the body is in equilibrium, the muscles are relaxed and no longer compensating to hold the body’s posture together. The muscles now have the capacity to release more energy, power and strength. By fabricating a neuromuscular sports guard, we locate your ideal bite position and build the mouthguard to hold your mouth in that position, resulting in the ultimate sports mouthguard. We use the latest computer-aided dental technology to create a form-fitting, customised mouthguard that gives you the best, most comfortable protection possible for your teeth.
